Canadian Pharmacy Recommends Healthy Mental Care for Kids Who Self-Harm

Doctors
have long known that some kids suffering severe emotional turmoil find relief
in physical pain — cutting or burning or sticking themselves with pins to
achieve a form of release. Generic
Lexapro
can surely help these patients ease their depression and let go of
hurting themselves.

“Most
young people who self-harm suffer from some underlying psychological
disorder,” said Jeffrey Bridge, a researcher with the Center for Innovation
in Pediatric Practice at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and
the study’s lead author. “It’s critical to conduct a mental health
assessment in addition to the evaluation of their physical health if we’re to
get to the root of their problems.”

“Between
8 and 10 percent of all adolescents are believed to engage in some form of
self-injurious behavior,” Bridge said.

“I
had one little boy that had one whole quarter of his head, he’d pulled out all
the hair,” said Mary Curran, executive director of Catholic Family
Services in Crestwood, Mo., and a psychologist who specializes in self-harming
behaviors.

“It
helps them deal with their feelings,” Curran said. “It’s a
distraction for them. It’s usually to give them something else to think about
and something else to do with their hands.”

“There
are other reasons, too,” said Dr. Stephanie Sims, a psychiatrist with the
University of Florida College of Medicine in Jacksonville. “Some hurt
themselves to get attention, others because they’re angry with themselves or
because it helps them resist suicidal impulses. Some even hurt themselves to
feel the high that comes with the body’s release of hormones in response to
pain signals.”

“The
best treatment for kids who self-harm is to deal with their underlying
emotional problems,” experts say. “The key component of any
intervention would be treatment of the underlying psychopathology,” Bridge
said.

“That’s
why it is crucial that emergency rooms identify adolescents engaging in
self-harming behaviors and get them therapeutic help,” he said.

“Once
identified, kids can be treated using such psychotherapeutic techniques as
cognitive-behavioral therapy,” Sims said. “They also can receive
pharmaceutical help through medications such as antidepressants and anti-anxiety
drugs.” Then, to buy Lexapro is
recommended.

“But
unfortunately,” Bridge said, “the culture at most hospitals works
against kids getting help during those crucial interactions at emergency rooms.”

“Previous
research indicates some hospitals and emergency departments have no access to
mental health professionals,” he said. “Also, staff will often
minimize the seriousness of self-harm, especially if patients have presented in
the recent past.”

“It
can be difficult,” Curran said. “Kids are pretty sneaky about how
they do that. It’s very difficult for parents to catch it.”

“Ask
them what is cutting doing for them,” she suggested. “What do they
get out of it? Ask about suicide, but don’t assume that they are suicidal. Let
them know you want to help improve their coping skills so they don’t have to
use cutting as a way to deal with their emotions.” Canadian pharmacy stresses that hurting one’s self will only make
things worse when dealing with emotions – face whatever problem is at hand and
take things one step at a time.

Coping With Back And Neck Pain During Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be a beautiful thing. But for some people it may not be. It may be a very long nine months of swelling and back pain. Hopefully it is just temporary and nothing to worry about. If you have back pain during your pregnancy, you do not want it to affect your delivery and make it more difficult or painful.Pregnant women and back painEighty percent of women will experience back pain at some point during their pregnancies. The severity of this pain during pregnancy ranges from mild discomfort after standing for long periods of time to debilitating pain that interferes with daily life. Although back pain can be a sign of a more serious condition, including labor, in most cases, it is the result of changes happening within the body.Factors that influence back pain during pregnancyThe spine is vulnerable due to the following factors during pregnancy:    * Hormone production during pregnancy makes joints less stable (to allow the pelvis to spread as the baby grows)    *Typical weight gain of 25-35 pounds during pregnancy, with the majority or extra weight distributed around the abdomenBack pain and neck pain can disrupt a pregnant woman’s daily routine but the problem continues even at night when it is time to sleep. This kind of pain does not allow anyone to have a good night of sleep, and this problem becomes bigger for women in this condition. But what causes this kind of pain during pregnancy? There are a number of factors which are responsible for this. For example, an increase of hormones lead to a shift in joints and loosening of ligaments that may affect the support a woman’s back usually experiences. Another cause is that a pregnant woman’s center of gravity will gradually move forward which causes her posture to change, and of course, because of the baby, there is additional weight that the back must support. The good news is that these problems can be solved with a back support pillow. The Sleep Better Pillow is a good example of a back rest pillow or a lumbar support pillow because it has been designed to be able to mould itself to a person’s head, neck and shoulders, giving a pregnant woman in this case perfect spinal alignment all night long. This is very useful as doctors recommend these women to avoid sleeping on their back and make sure that their back is perfectly aligned, which is very difficult to accomplish with a regular pillow. But the Sleep Better Pillow is perfect for people who has to or likes to sleep on their side, because its heat and pressure sensitive foam reacts to a person’s body and moulds to one’s body shape. Besides it includes arm tunnels that work like a bridge and are very useful for side sleepers because they can place their arm there and rest comfortably without disturbing the head, back or neck. When you are pregnant, you will want to try to take it easy when you can. You do not want to be over active and hurt yourself. But at the same time, you do want to try and stay active. This is especially true if you were active before you became pregnant. Lying or sitting around is only going to aggravate your back pain, so learn some simple exercises you can do or just go for a walk. You always want to make sure to consult your doctor before you start any exercise routine. They will let you know what is safe to do and what you sGood NewsThe good news is that the median time for back pain to resolve was within six months. Approximately 35% of patients continued to describe intermittent back pain lasting 1-1/2 months after partum. At the first postpartum visit, only 15% of patients continued to have low back pain regardless when the symptoms started during pregnancy. Therefore, in most cases, pain does improve after the postpartum period.

Can a Chiropractor Help Sciatica?

A chiropractor can help sciatica patients experience relief from debilitating pain. Chiropractic care is one of the major non-surgical sciatica treatment techniques. This is a treatment based on scientific principles, and many kinds of sciatica can be successfully treated by highly trained chiropractors.

Chiropractic manipulation can treat a wide array of musculoskeletal disorders. Trained professionals offer manual manipulation and adjustments to the spine targeting proper alignment of the spinal column which helps correct the various conditions that cause sciatica.

What Is Sciatica Pain?

Sciatica pain is the result of the compression or irritation of one of the spinal nerve roots located at the back of the leg. Depending on the severity of the condition, symptoms of sciatica could range from a numbness or tingling sensation to acute pain in the leg or even trouble moving the leg.

Chiropractic Manipulation

Chiropractic care begins with chiropractors diagnosing the precise conditions causing sciatica pain through a comprehensive physical examination. As the chiropractic care progresses, the patient begins to experience increased blood circulation and release of blockages for strengthening of the immune system.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Some of the advantages of chiropractic sciatica pain relief treatment include:

•    Strengthening of the body
•    Increase in flexibility and vitality
•    Reduced response to painful stimuli
•    Better blood circulation
•    Injury prevention
•    Reduced muscle spasm, stress, inflammation
•    Improved coordination of the joints
•    Improved immunity of the body
•    Promotion of natural healing

Since natural healing is one of the major aims of chiropractic care, it is a safe procedure and ideal for treatment for sciatica, musculoskeletal disorders, and injury.

Why You Need the Right Chiropractor

The key elements of chiropractic care for sciatica treatment and other conditions are passive stretching, isometric stretching and massaging. But the basis of chiropractic care is manual manipulation. This is why the skill of the healthcare professional is vital. Gentle thrust of the hands can correct misaligned vertebrae and many other such spinal disorders. It ensures restoration of maximum body movement and relief from pain without surgery or medication.

What Is Chronic Pain

Pain can be divided into two categories according to their duration, namely: acute pain and chronic pain. Acute pain lasts for a couple of seconds to less than six months. It may resolve by itself or need medical attention depending on the origin of pain. The pain you feel when you accidentally touch a hot pan is an acute pain and doesn’t necessarily need to be rushed to the ER. The pain you feel when your appendix is inflamed, requiring surgery (appendectomy), is also acute pain. Without surgical intervention, this can be fatal to one’s health and may even cause death once appendix is ruptured.

Chronic pain, on the other hand, is pain that lasts longer than six months. Others also define it as pain that lasts longer than the expected length of treatment time. Pain that is chronic may be classified as nociceptive or neuropathic (and they can be acute too). Nociceptive pain is further sub-divided into somatic and visceral pain. Nociceptive pain is generally a sensation that originates from the tissues of the body.

It is called somatic when it originates from the skin, muscles, ligaments, bones, tendons, fasciae, and blood vessels. They are easily localized by the brain since this kind of pain occurs more often (as acute pain). Specific examples of chronic somatic pain include chronic back pain syndrome, arthritic pain, and fibromyalgia. Headaches can also become chronic.

Pain originating from the organs such as the liver, heart, kidneys, pancreas, and the like is called visceral pain. Unlike somatic pain, this kind is harder to pinpoint. This is because your brain does not experience having pain in the organs that often, and is not used to it. The pain may sometimes be referred. This means that the pain may be felt elsewhere in the body and not at the specific site of injury or damage. An excellent example is with a liver or gallbladder affectation; the pain may be felt at the right tip of the scapular region. When the lungs are also affected, pain may sometimes present itself at the left shoulder.

Neuropathic pain originates from the nerves. They may be caused by a malfunction, malformation in the structure, or damage and irritation of and to the nerves. Neuropathic pain is divided according to its origin: peripheral and central. The sensation is generally described as having burning, tingling, pins and needles, or electrical.

Pain management in chronic pain is evidently more sophisticated than treatment of acute pain. Management may require coordination with several medical personnel to effectively alleviate the pain and enable the sufferer to function normally or as close to normal as possible. The pain management team may be composed of the pain doctor, physiotherapist, clinical psychologist, nursing practitioners, and occupational therapist.

It requires an interdisciplinary approach since long-term pain can have other effects such as changes in behavior. The patient may become irritable at times, feel anxious and may even advance to depression. Cognitive effects may include forgetfulness, difficulty finishing tasks, lack of concentration, and minor accidents, all of which might result to constraints in cognitive-based treatments.

Often, over-the-counter drugs are not enough to cause comfort in a chronic pain sufferer. Prescription drugs such as tramadol and other narcotics to treat moderate to severe pain are required. Other medications that are not categorized as analgesics are also prescribed by doctors for chronic pain. They may include anticonvulsants, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, and placebos in the treatment. In some cases, surgery may be necessary.
